Brisbane Roar Youth were pushed all the way by a competitive Brisbane Strikers before finally emerging with a hard-fought 2-0 win at Perry Park on Sunday evening.
Cyrus Dehmie opened the scoring and collected his 15th goal of the season in the 34th minute but any suggestions of a comfortable win against the bottom side were put on hold as Young Roar were repelled repeatedly by their determined and lively opponents.
In the 94th minute, substitute Lochie Johnston finally put the game to bed with his debut NPL Men’s goal, in the process becoming the 13th different Roar player to find the net this season, a remarkable achievement only matched by ladder leaders Peninsula Power.
Head Coach Chris Grossmann was happy to take all three points from a tough contest.
“We knew this game wouldn’t be easy,” Grossmann said. “Strikers’ form over the past month has been excellent which they showed again tonight.
“But in saying that, Josh [Moreland] hit the post early in the first half and if that had gone in maybe it would have been a different story.
“Ultimately, it’s a valuable three points from a team which will challenge everyone [moving forward], so now we look ahead to the massive game at [Gold Coast] Knights on Friday.
“It’s a short turnaround,” he continued, “but it is what it is and we’ll be ready.”
An intriguing night of football looms on Friday night with the Knights clash scheduled simultaneously alongside Moreton Bay United’s meeting Peninsula, two matches which could well shape the remainder of the season for all four clubs.
