Report: Young Roar Put Six Past Lightning

Brisbane Roar Youth continued their stunning run of goalscoring form with a dominant 6-1 defeat of Logan Lightning at Cornubia Park on Saturday evening.

Cyrus Dehmie rose to equal top of the NPL Queensland Men’s goalscoring ladder, collecting four goals in a superb performance by the rising star, whilst Ben Holliday and Eli Adams rounded out the total with finishes off their own.

A tight first half against a counter-attacking Lightning outfit saw the teams go into half-time at 0-0 as Nathan Foster excelled between the sticks with two tremendous saves when the home side looked certain to take the lead.

After the break, a noticeable upping of the tempo by the Young Roar paid dividends with three goals in nine minutes effectively putting the result beyond doubt.

Apart from a single lapse of concentration which allowed Matt Fitzgerald to get behind the defence and score it was a superlative forty-five minutes of football.

“We weren’t great in the first half,” said Coach Chris Grossman after full time. “But we were electric in the second.”

“But they (Logan Lightning) were good in the first half,” he continued. “They frustrated us and caused us many different problems. They’ll take points from a lot of teams.”

Ultimately though it was a fantastic win which Grossman stressed can be credited In large part to the tremendous squad currently at the club.

“When you have the firepower to come off the bench like we do, you are capable of playing at that high level for the whole ninety minutes.”

“We’ve got a six-point buffer now [from Lions in fourth place] so we need to just keep pushing on and improving all the time.”

It’s still early in the season but Grossman believes in certain key areas his team needs to excel within if they are to challenge for the title.

“Whichever team has the best consistency and efficiency will be the team that wins the league.”

On Sunday Roar Youth travel to Compass Showgrounds for another vital match-up, this time against Redlands United.
