Brisbane Roar Youth’s recent run of fine form came to an end when they were beaten 3-0 by Gold Coast Knights at the Croatian Sports Centre on Friday night.

Knights took until the 64th minute to break the deadlock through Curtis Stollery before former Roar player Cai Tipaldo doubled the lead 10 minutes later.

In the 92nd minute, proven goalscorer Jheison Macuace rounded off the evening for the home side following a sublime pass from Nic Panetta.

Young Roar stayed in the game for an hour thanks in no small part to goalkeeper Nathan Foster, who performed well despite having to pick the ball out of the net three times.

On another positive note, Keegan Jelacic made his return from the bench after a long injury layoff as he aims to once again begin jostling for a place in the A-League line-up.

Head Cach Chris Grossmann was philosophical after the game.

“You have to be honest, from the first minute when they nearly scored they were better than us,” he said. “We’re all very disappointed at our performance in a massive game against a quality team.”

Heavy rain prior to kick off and steady drizzle throughout ensured a slippery surface which did Young Roar no favours but Grossmann wasn’t looking for excuses.

“It made no difference to the outcome. They handled the conditions and we didn’t, it’s as simple as that,” he said. “The surface at [the Croatian Sports Centre] is the equal of any in the NPL.

“We’ve got another massive game on Wednesday [against Sunshine Coast Wanderers] so we have to regroup, have a look where things went wrong and try to rectify them ASAP.”

That game will kick off at 8pm at Ballinger Park.

Gold Coast Knights – Tipaldo 74’ – 0-2

Max Brown tries a cheeky back heel inside the box, allowing Tipaldo time to swivel and thrash home the second goal.

Panetta lays off a stunning outside of the boot pass for Macuace who has no trouble slotting the ball past a stranded Foster in goal.
