The loss of seven starting players to pre-season A-League action wasn’t enough to stop Brisbane Roar Youth from collecting a comfortable 3-1 victory over Redlands United at The Compass Grounds in Round 22 of the NPL Queensland season.

Josh DiMarco and Dom Horwood became the 14th and 15th different players respectively to score for Brisbane this season when they took their team into a 2-0 lead by the 32nd minute.

Adam Broderick brought the margin back to only one on the cusp of halftime but Josh Moreland put the result beyond doubt in the 72nd minute with his fifth strike of the year.

The list of players absent from this contest – Hassan Ramazani, Nathan Foster, Louis Zabala, Brandon McMorrow, Eli Adams, Keegan Jelacic, Cyrus Dehmie – looked to be a challenging hurdle but instead provided proof of the Academy’s depth and training systems.

Captain Harry Talbot returned to the starting line-up after a long layoff following an early-season injury, in another huge positive for the tight-knit group, looking comfortable and imposing in the middle of the park.

In a game of largely shared possession, the telling statistic came in attack as Brisbane overwhelmed their opponents in the key metric of shots, both on and off target.

With Chris Grossmann also in Wide Bay, Owen Baker claimed the senior coaching role and was suitably pleased with the outcome and performance.

“The most pleasing thing today was that we controlled the game,” he said. “I had every faith in the boys coming in and thought they played really well.

“It’s not about being back up for the so-called better players, all these boys have talent in their own right.”

“Having Harry [Talbot] back was always going to make a difference to us but today I was hugely impressed with Sam Klein who took the opportunity with both hands and was close to the best player of the field,” he stated.

Young Roar play again on Saturday evening, this time against Gold Coast United at Coplick Family Sports Park with kick-off at 6:30pm.

Brisbane Roar Youth – Josh DiMarco 13’ – 0-1

Josh DiMarco takes possession on the left, pushes outside a defender then curls an exquisite shot in off the far post.

Brisbane Roar Youth – Dom Horwood 32’ – 0-2

From a long set-piece, Redlands allow the ball to arrive at the feet of Dom Horwood who can’t miss from close range, and doesn’t.

Redlands United – Angus Broderick 46’ – 1-2

Broderick combines with Carlton Westerdale before breaking into the area and smashing the ball high into the net.

Brisbane Roar Youth – Moreland 72’ – 1-3

Rhys Gray crosses from the right for Moreland who pulls off a neat change of direction then drives the ball into the bottom corner.
